Weekly Football Review for Manawatu 6th and 7th of May 2023

 

JUNIOR FOOTBALL OPENING WEEK

Our Junior Football season got underway this week with all our junior grades having their first matches Saturday.

Our 13th Grade teams got their season off to a great start with their one-day Tournament on Sunday at Colquhoun Park.

Plate Winners = Marist Development                                                 Plate Runners Up = Red Sox Vipers

Lotto Central Federation League – Round 5

We only had one match played in the Lotto Central Federation League over the weekend which ended in a 1-1 stalemate as league leaders Thirsty Whale Napier City Rovers travelled down the road to take on Shani’s Taradale AFC in the Napier derby and the teams couldn’t be separated. James Mack the Third put Rovers ahead after one minute before Zac Madsen equalised in the 32nd minute as the teams played out the rest of the game with no further score. The match between Bayleys Palmerston North United and ALH Limited Gisborne Thistle was postponed with Watson Integrity PN Marist FC having the Bye. 

 

Women’s Federation League – Round 4

Excel Refrigeration Moturoa AFC have opened up a six point lead at the top of the table after defeating OneStaff PN Marist Women’s Reserves 6-1 in Taranaki. Fernanda Toscani hit her second hat trick in two games to move to nine strikes for the season and open up a five goal lead in the Golden Boot race. Kitchens By Healey Palmerston North United and ATLAS NP Rangers AFC Women’s Feds both picked up their first point of the season as they drew their match at Memorial Park 1-1. Former Taranaki player Paris Liu gave United the lead in the first half before Sasha Rasmussen earnt Rangers the point with an 80th minute equaliser. Havelock North Wanderers Women’s Feds had the Bye for Round 4.  


YORB HORIZONS PREMIERSHIP

At Donnelly Park Levin AFC welcomed the Youm Marist Reserves. Marist took an early lead through an 8th minute Santino Canterna strike.  Just after the break Levin equalised thanks to Oliver JamesCanterna netted again in the 65th minute to put Marist back in front and the away side managed to hold on to the lead and claim a well-deserved 2-1 win away from home.

At Timona Park Team Lewis Innovation Feilding AFC hosted PNBHS 1ST XI. A Xavier Coleman goal in the 13th minute proving to be the difference between the sides as the students picked up a valuable 1-0 Win over a quality Feilding side.

At Massey University Advance Electrical Palmerston North United welcomed the LongChill Takaro AFC Jokers. United jumped out to a 2-0 lead thanks to goals from Connor Vine and Alex Bowden. On the stroke of half time Takaro reduced the deficit thanks to a Kane Russell strike. Straight after half time Anthony Jones restored United’s buffer before a 65th minute Blair Lankshear goal once again brought Takaro closer. The sides both created chances late on without troubling the scorers any further as United held on to take a hard fought 3-2 Victory on the day.

At Wembley Park Wanganui City FC 1sts took on GJ Gardner Homes Whanganui Athletic Reserves in the first Wanganui derby of the 2023 Premiership Season. Athletic took a 3-0 lead into the break thanks to a Joshua Smith Brace and a Quinn Mailman strike. City responded with goals from Max Davidson in the 73rd and Mason McGahey in the 80th minute to reduce the deficit to just the one goal. Any hopes of the comeback being completed were erased in the 90th minute when Tre DeJohn netted for Athletic as they claimed a thrilling 4-2 victory.

Game the round (Easter Cup QF):

Advance Electrical Palmerston North United take on PNBHS 1st XI. Both sides are in a good vein of form and this promises to be an exciting quarter final match up.


HORIZONS CHAMPIONSHIP

Levin Reserves welcomed Isles Construction Marist Inter to Donnelly Park. Charles Parker gave Inter the lead with a 40th minute goal. Levin started the second half strongly with Jaedyn Dawson and Cody Stewart both finding the back of the net. However, it was ultimately a day to remember for Charles Parker as he netted another three second half goals to make it four on the day giving his side a deserved 4-2 win on the road.

First half goals from Jacob Hansen and Ashraf Muhammad-Ali were enough to see the Palmerston North United Development take a 2-0 win over the Chillmax Takaro Titans

At Timona Park the Team Campbell - Harcourts Feilding Utd AFC Men's Reserves and PNBHS 2nd XI went to battle. The match took until the 66th minute to record its first goal When Blake Haswell netted for the students. Caleb Christiansen the equalised for the home side before Nicholas Hanly gave them the lead in the 86th minute. Feilding looked to be heading towards victory until Haswell scored his 2nd of the day in the 89th minute to level things up as the match ended in an exciting 2-2 Draw.

Game the round (Charity Cup QF):

Team Campbell - Harcourts Feilding Utd AFC Men's Reserves go to battle with Levin AFC Reserves at Timona Park. Both sides have been mixing their form and will be looking to progress to the Semi Final stage. Who will it be?


MANAWATU DIVISION 1

At Donnelly Park Levin Colts hosted Smartphone Repairs Marist Celts. Marist got off to a great start thanks to a brace of goals from Bailey Wynd as well as a Brandon Holdt strike as they took a 3-0 lead into the break.  The second half seen the young Levin side come out with a point to prove and although they could not erase the deficit, they managed to reduce it thanks to a 62nd minute Nathan Stout goal. Marist heading home with a 3-1 win on the road.

At Celaeno Park Takaro Jhapa United came out 4-1 winners over Freedom Plus Marist Bulldogs. Craig Porter Netting for Marist. Takaro Scorers Unknown.

Also, at Celaeno Park the Red Sox Wrinklies took on the North End Old Boys in a Clubhouse derby. North End getting off to a flying start thanks to a 19-minute hattrick by Cam Dearlove. William Hodge and Crispin Moore added to the tally before the break as the old boys went into half time with a comfortable lead. After the break the wrinklies reduced the deficit thanks to a Benjamin Pitcher Brace as well as a well taken goal from Andrew Roydhouse. The old boys were needing to stem the flow and were able to do so with a 72nd Minute Matt Wallace strike before William Hodge grabbed his 2nd of the match to seal a 7-3 win for the Old Boys.

At the University it was the Massey Good Guys up against the Chillmax Takaro Rebels. Cole Freeman opened the scoring for Massey with an 11th minute goal. Josh Draper equalised for Takaro in the 14th minute before Massey took the lead again in the 18th minute thanks to a fortunate own goal. Connor Tunnicliffe extended the lead in the 39th minute as the students went into the break ahead by 3-1. Another own goal by Takaro extended Masseys lead soon after the break before 2 quick Takaro goals from Draper and Ben Prescott seen the match poised as the student’s lead was reduced to just 1 goal. However late goals from Michael Hilson and Joel Boyden once again extended Masseys lead and the match ended 6-3 in favour of the Good Guys.

Game the round (Pelosi Trophy QF):

The Massey Good Guys and the Chillmax Takaro Rebels go to battle for the second consecutive week. Last weeks match was an exciting one and this week’s match will be nothing less. Who will progress to the last four of the cup?


MANAWATU DIVISION 2

At the University the Massey Rigs welcomed Red Sox A’s. It was the A’s who claimed clubhouse bragging rights in this match as they were too strong for the rigs claiming a comfortable 9-2 win on the day. Goal Scorers for the A’s were Daniel Harris (3), Dalin Wilson (3), David Saunders (2), and Ian Robinson. Masseys Scorers unknown.

In the Marist Derby the N&R Builders Park Rangers and the CAC Greenies went to battle. Brendan Hurley gave the Greenies the lead in just the 6th minute. Peter Hunter equalised for the Park Rangers in the 65th minute. Greenies again took the lead in the 73rd when Robert Crawford netted. The lead only lasted 3 minutes before Zac Beechey-Gradwell equalised for the Park Rangers. The sides could not be split from there on in and the match ended in a thrilling 2-2 Draw.

At Timona Park McDonalds Feilding Development hosted the unbeaten Red Sox Saints. It was the saints who continued their winning ways in this one as they came away 4-1 winners against a determined development side. Scorers for the Saints were Charlos Wakur, David De Jonge, Sendiron Enumbi, and Elijah Houlahan. Developments Scorer Unknown.

At the Ashhurst Domain The Mad Butcher Takaro Fury hosted Levin AFC Sports. The sides played out an exciting 2-2 draw. Pradeep Thapa and Justin Turner netting for the home side before Brendan Howell and Jade Strawbridge netted for the visitors and the teams could not be split.

At Celaeno Park North End vets took on the Dannevirke Rangers. North End raced to a 4-0 half time lead thanks to goals from Ayiya Bikimi (2), Kuda Ngwerume, and Dylan Odell. The visitors pulled one back after half time thanks to Calder Woodfield. The vets then put the foot down and added three more goals from Reuben Corin, James Bell and Liam How as they sealed a well deserved 7-1 win.

N&R Builders Marist Park Rangers go to battle with The Mad Butcher Takaro Fury in what is sure to be a cracking match. Who will progress to the next round of the cup?


MANAWATU DIVISION 3

JRM Automotive Marist Royals took on the Woodville AFC 1st Team. The sides went into the break tied up at 1-1. The second half seen the Royals side come out firing and with Three unanswered goals they took a 4-1 win on the day. Scorers for Marist Joshua Morgan (2), and Isaiah Salawalak. Woodville’s goal coming through Josh Ware.

At Timona Park the Groombridge Electrical C team were comfortable 7-1 winners over Manawatu Plunderers. Scorers for Feilding were Gamied Fredericks (2), Luke Groombridge, Mohammed Aizaz, Cameron Fairless, Gary Jones, and Ryan Dobson. Plunderer’s goal was scored by Colin Currell.

Post Office Hotel Pahiatua also continued their winning form with a 7-1 victory against the North End Socials. Goal Scorers for Pahiatua were Liam Williamson, Carey Williamson, Caleb Henderson, Jacco Verheji, Kiran Bhuchar, Benjamin Harlow, and Jordan Chard. North Ends scorer was Callum Waller.

Red Sox Hustlers took on Takaro Bua United at Celaeno Park. It was the Hustlers who managed to grind out a 2-1 victory in this match thanks to goals from Dion Chew Ying Liang, and David Burrows. Takaro Scorer unknown.

Chillmax Takaro Bua hosted Levin AFC Socials at the Ashhurst Domain. Levin took a 1-0 lead into half time thanks to Tetoa Talia. The second half however belonged to the Glory and Casey Robinson- Human and Callum Coster goals meant they were able to grab a come from behind 2-1 victory on the day.

Game the round (Nielsen Cup PR):

At Bush Park it is Post Office Hotel Pahiatua FC up against Woodville AFC 1sts. Pahiatua have started the season strongly however the Woodville team is improving each week and in cup football anything can happen. This is sure to be a great match who will move on to the next round?


MANAWATU MASTERS DIVISION

At the Ashhurst Domain Resonant Marist master’s welcomed Levin AFC Vets. Levin went into the break with a 2-0 lead. The second half produced 6 goals in total four for Marist and 2 for Levin as the sides could not be split with the match ending in a thrilling 4-4 draw. Scorers for Marist were Richard Lawton (2), Amory Yarwood, and Darryl Newsome. Levin’s Scorers were Paul Rainham, Brent Tucker, Lex Van Echten, and Greg Mitchell-Kouttab.

Also, at the Domain the Marist Banshees and Jennian Homes Feilding United masters went to battle. In what was a close game it was Feilding who came out on top by a margin of 4-3. Goal Scorers for either side unknown.

In the Red Sox Derby, it was the Old Boys against the Legends. Legends claiming a thrilling 3-2 Victory with a 92nd minute winner. Legends Scorers were Mark McCarten, Matthew Kennedy, and Riccardo Areosa. Old Boys Scorers Unknown.

strike for the home side whist a brace of goals from Michel Manning as well as a Wayne HaxtonAt Wembley Park Wanganui Marist Wanderers welcomed MKM Marist Shamrock Rovers. In what was a thrilling first half it was the home side who lead 4-3 going into the break. A Hattrick of goals from John Myszczyszyn and a goal from Michael Johnson for the visiting Rovers meant the game was delicately poised heading into the second half. It was the visitors who were able to get the decisive goals in the thanks to Grant Rudman and John Myszczyszyn completing his Hattrick with the winning goal in the 90th minute as the Shamrock Rovers claimed a come from behind 5-4 win away from home.

Game the round (Master’s Cup QF):

A Marist derby between the Resonant Masters and the Banshees. Who will mange to claim bragging rights along with their spot in the semi-finals?


TEAM ROBINSON MANAWATU WOMEN’S

At The University Massey Reserves were up against Isles Construction Marist Development. Massey got off to a great start thanks to a well taken goal from Elise Rophia. Marist responded with 2 very well taken goals from Jessie Falloon. A second half brace to Lisa Ford extended Marist’s lead as they ran away 4-1 winners on the day.

Levin AFC welcomed Tranzit Marist Mysteries to Donnelly Park. A 14th minute goal from Ruth Perese enough to give the home side a hard earned 1-0 win.

Also, at the University the Massey Golden Girls took on the Takaro Avengers. It was the Avengers who claimed the win in this match by 3-2. Scorers for Takaro were Sarah Cowan (2) and Monique Roberts whilst the Golden Girls goals were scored by Jaime Rae-McGregor and Charlotte Hendry.

At the Showgrounds in Dannevirke the Valkyrie welcomed Rosco's Bulk Yard Feilding Utd AFC. Goals Either side of Halftime through Sarah Fairless and Ella Payton enough to give Feilding a 2-0 win.

At Hokowhitu Park the Chapple Architecture PN Marist Mayhem were too strong for a spirited Takaro Harlequins side. 12-0 the final score in this match. Scorers for Marist were Nicole Robertson (2), Charlotte Rowden (2), Stacey Gunn (2), Alevya Skerrett (2), Megan Williams, Catherine Andrews, Bryony Large, and Jessica Richards.

Game of the round (5):

Isles Construction Marist Development up against Levin AFC. Both Sides coming off good wins in round 4 and will be looking to continue their winning ways this week.
